For the DRV8825 the voltage is set between the potentiometers and the power ground. Voltage at the pot =.9* (stepper current/2) the 90% is to cut down on the heat a bit. This needs to be done while the drivers are energized. The easiest way I have found is to move all 3 axis 1mm in repetier host and leave it connected while you adjust the POTS.

A custom controller would address the design features of the MPCNC, make it very easy to hook up and the ESP32 would add Wifi, Bluetooth and higher speeds. The goal would be to create a low cost, open source controller.

Mostly Printed CNC Upgrade Ryan Zellars came up with a pretty cool design for a CNC that runs on conduit to win a design contest. Well, he won. The reason was because it is a pretty cool idea on how to make a very inexpensive multi purpose CNC platform. All you really need for this is some conduit, bearings, nuts/bolts/screws, and 3D printed parts.
